How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK in 2026? A Hiring Guide for Businesses

By Amit Saini, founder of Vimana Digital · First published March 2025 as "SEO Hiring Guide for Businesses", rewritten October 2026 · 10-minute read

SEO in the UK costs roughly £400–£800 a month for a local small business, £1,000–£5,000 a month for a national campaign and £5,000 or more for international work, according to 2026 agency guides. Freelancers typically charge £75–£120 an hour. Vimana Digital publishes its prices: local from £400, national £1,000–£4,000.

What UK agencies charge for SEO in 2026

No independent UK survey of SEO prices exists, so the honest picture is a range of agency guides. Here they are side by side with what we charge.

For a wider benchmark, Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers (US-weighted) and found average agency retainers of about $3,200 a month and freelancer retainers of about $1,350 (Ahrefs pricing survey). All market figures are secondary sources retrieved October 2026 and will drift. Our own prices exclude VAT.

One note on reading the table: UK quotes are usually ex-VAT, so add 20% when budgeting.

What actually costs money in an SEO campaign

SEO prices look arbitrary until you see what the hours go on. A monthly retainer is mostly people's time, split across:

  • Technical work: crawl fixes, speed, structured data, redirects. Front-loaded; heavier on big or broken sites.
  • Content: new pages and rewrites. The biggest variable. Four well-researched pages a month costs far more than one.
  • Authority: earning links and mentions from relevant sites. Slow, manual, and the part cheap packages fake.
  • Local signals: Google Business Profile posts, categories, hours, review replies, citations. Cheap per location; expensive across ten.
  • Measurement and reporting: tracking calls and forms to the page that produced them; the monthly report and a quarterly review.
  • AI search: structuring pages so they are quoted by Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT. See AI marketing.

What moves a national campaign from £1,000 towards £4,000 is volume on those lines: more keyword groups, more pages a month, more outreach, more locations. Any agency should be able to show you that split before you commit; ours is on the SEO agency page.

The four ways SEO is priced, and the catch in each

ModelHow it worksGood forThe catch
Monthly retainerFixed fee for an agreed scope of hours or deliverablesMost businesses; SEO is continuousWatch for 12-month minimum terms and vague scopes
Project feeOne-off price for a defined job: an audit, a migration, a content batchSite rebuilds, migration SEO, one-off SEO auditsNobody maintains the gains afterwards unless you plan for it
Hourly or day rate£75–£120 an hour freelance; agency day rates higherConsultancy for an in-house teamHard to budget; incentive to take longer
Performance-basedPay per ranking or per leadSounds low-riskOften targets easy keywords, uses risky tactics, or defines "lead" loosely. Google notes no one can guarantee a ranking

Our own model is a rolling monthly retainer with one month's notice and no long contract. We expect to see improvement within three months; if we can't, you are free to leave at any time.

How long before SEO pays for itself?

Local campaigns usually show movement in Google Maps and local results within one to three months, and for a very local business sometimes in under a month. National campaigns take six to twelve months to produce material returns, longer in crowded sectors, and new domains start slower than established ones. For a Leicester virtual-office client, a brand-new domain with no authority reached position three for its main local search term; see the Virtual Office Leicester case study.

Whatever you pay, the monthly report should show:

  • Enquiries from organic search (calls, forms, chats), tracked to the page that produced them
  • Search Console clicks and impressions, including AI Overview clicks, which Google counts under the "Web" search type
  • Rankings for the keyword groups you agreed, not a vanity list of hundreds
  • Pages published, links earned and technical issues fixed that month
  • Google Business Profile calls, direction requests and new reviews where local is in scope
  • A plain-English note on what happens next

If the report is a ranking table with no enquiry numbers, you cannot tell whether the money is working.

Why SEO costs are harder to judge in 2026: AI Overviews

The arithmetic behind SEO budgets has changed. Ahrefs' analysis of 300,000 keywords found the number-one organic result's click-through rate fell 58% between December 2023 and December 2025 where an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs, February 2026). Pew Research found users click a traditional result on only 8% of searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one (Pew, July 2025). In the UK, Ofcom reports about 30% of Google searches now show an AI Overview, and ChatGPT had 1.8 billion UK visits in the first eight months of 2025 (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025).

Two things follow for your budget:

  • A ranking is worth less than it was, but a citation is worth more. Seer Interactive found organic click-through rose from 0.74% to 1.02% when a brand was cited inside the AI Overview itself (Seer, February 2025).
  • Citation is a separate target from ranking. Semrush found only around a quarter of AI Overview links overlap with the top ten organic results (Semrush, July 2025).

So when comparing quotes, ask what the agency does to get your pages cited, not just ranked. Google is clear that no special file or "AI schema" is needed (Google Search Central, AI features, December 2025), so anyone selling you an "llms.txt package" is charging for nothing. One of our clients, a Leicester mortgage broker, is now cited directly inside Google's AI Overview for a local self-employed mortgage search; see the Bradgate Financial Solutions case study.

How to hire an SEO agency without getting burned

Google publishes its own advice for hiring an SEO (Google Search Central, "Do you need an SEO?", updated June 2026). Its questions, with what a good answer looks like:

  • Can you show me examples of previous work? Named clients, with outcomes, that you can check.
  • Do you follow Google's Search Essentials? A plain yes, and no link schemes, doorway pages or hidden text.
  • What results do you expect, and in what timeframe? A written range, not a guarantee. Google's words: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking."
  • What's your experience in my industry and area? Honest, including "we haven't worked in yours".
  • Who will I deal with? A named person, not an account-management queue.

Then add five of your own:

  • What exactly is in the monthly fee, in hours or deliverables?
  • Who owns the accounts, content and data if I leave? (You should.)
  • What is the contract length and notice period?
  • How do you track enquiries, not just rankings?
  • What do you do about AI Overviews?

Red flags that should end the call: guaranteed rankings, a "special relationship with Google", secrecy about methods, prices under £400 a month for "full SEO", and a refusal to put the scope in writing.

How much does SEO cost per month for a small business in the UK?

Around £400–£800 a month is the realistic range for a single-location small business in 2026, according to UK agency guides, with most SME retainers between £1,000 and £5,000 when national visibility is the goal. Vimana Digital's local SEO starts from £400 a month and national campaigns run £1,000–£4,000 a month.

Is cheap SEO under £400 a month worth it?

Rarely. Below about £400 a month UK packages are usually automated: software-generated reports, templated page tweaks and little human attention. They can look busy while changing nothing. If the budget is tight, a one-off audit followed by a short, focused local campaign usually beats a cheap ongoing package.

Do SEO agencies charge VAT on top?

Usually, yes. Most UK agency prices are quoted ex-VAT, so a £1,000-a-month retainer costs £1,200 to a business that cannot reclaim VAT. Ask whether a quote is inclusive before comparing agencies, and check whether any set-up or onboarding fee applies in the first month. Our own prices are quoted excluding VAT.

How much does SEO cost compared with Google Ads?

SEO is a monthly fee for lasting visibility; Google Ads is a fee plus the ad spend itself. UK PPC management typically costs 10–20% of spend or £300–£2,000 a month, on top of the budget (Advertizingly, 2026). Many businesses run both: ads for immediate enquiries, SEO to reduce dependence on them. See PPC management.

Can I do SEO myself instead of paying an agency?

Yes, and for a very local business it is worth starting there: keep your Google Business Profile complete, collect reviews, and make sure each service has its own page. Where agencies earn their fee is technical work, content at volume, link earning and measurement. A paid audit can tell you which of those you actually need.

Should I pay for SEO or a new website first?

If the website is slow, hard to use on a phone or impossible to edit, fix that first; SEO on a broken site is money spent on the wrong problem. If the site is sound but invisible, SEO first. An honest agency will tell you which applies, and should not sell you both by default.

Send us your website address. We'll come back with the three issues costing you the most visibility and a quote that shows exactly what the monthly fee buys, with no obligation and no contract to sign first.
