What does social media management include?

Social media management is the ongoing running of your business's social accounts: deciding what to post, making it, posting it, handling what comes back and measuring it. We split that into three tiers, shown against the UK market range from Whito's 2026 cost research.

Every tier includes profile setup or tidy-up, a content calendar you approve in advance, and the rule that you own every account, image and video we make. Paid advertising is not included in any tier; see Section 4.

Social media management or paid social: which do you need?

They're different jobs and we price them separately, because bundling them hides where the money goes.

SEO Agency SEO Company
  • Social media management (this page) keeps your accounts alive and credibleregular posts, replies, a presence that reassures people who look you up after a recommendation or a Google search. It builds slowly and it's cheap per month.
  • Paid socialputs a specific offer in front of a specific audience and is measured on cost per lead or sale. It works in days and stops when the spend stops. See Meta Ads for Facebook and Instagram and TikTok Ads for TikTok.
  • Boosting postssits between the two and mostly buys likes. We'd rather put the same £50 into a properly targeted ad.

UK agencies typically charge an extra £600–£2,000 a month to manage paid ads on top of organic management (Whito, 2026). If you want both, we quote two lines so you can drop either.

Which social media platforms should your business be on?

Fewer than you think. Two platforms done well beat five done badly. The UK numbers (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025; DataReportal, Digital 2026: United Kingdom, November 2025):

PlatformUK reachBest forOur honest take
FacebookUsed by 93% of UK adults (incl. Messenger); 38.8m ad reachLocal businesses, trades, clinics, community, over-35sStill the default for most local firms. Groups and recommendations drive real enquiries
Instagram35.5m ad reachVisual businesses: food, beauty, interiors, fitness, retailNeeds photo and Reels; dead accounts look worse than none

What we'd recommend for a typical local service business: Facebook plus Google Business Profile at Starter level, Instagram added when there's visual content to feed it, LinkedIn only if you sell to other businesses.

We can answer your messages, not just post

The most common reason a social account loses customers isn't bad content, it's the unanswered message. Someone asks "do you do Saturday appointments?" at 8pm, gets no reply, and books elsewhere by morning.

On the Growth and Full tiers we monitor comments and direct messages during business hours, answer routine questions from a brief you approve (hours, prices, areas, how to book), and pass anything that needs you straight on by email or WhatsApp. Nothing is committed on your behalf without your say-so, and we never argue with a complaint in public: we acknowledge, take it private and hand it to you.

Does social media help your Google rankings?

Only a little, and indirectly. In Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 local SEO experts, social signals rose slightly as a ranking factor while remaining minor compared with Google Business Profile, reviews and on-page content (Whitespark, 6 November 2025; factor movements via SearchLab Digital).

Where social does help is indirect: a consistent business name, address and phone across profiles strengthens Google's confidence in who you are; posts earn brand searches; shared content earns the occasional link. Google and AI assistants also check whether a business looks real and active, and an account last updated in 2023 doesn't help. We treat social as part of your SEO footprint, not a substitute for it.

The rules your social posts have to follow

Business posts are advertising under the CAP Code, and the ASA does act on small businesses. The ones that catch people out:

  • Giveaways and competitionsYou must state closing dates, how winners are chosen, any restrictions and the prize clearly, pick winners fairly and award the prize as promised. "Like and share to win" posts with no terms are the most common breach.
  • Testimonials and reviewsOnly genuine ones, with the customer's permission, and never edited to change their meaning. Incentivised or fake reviews are illegal under the DMCC Act 2024, and the CMA can now fine businesses directly (RPC, January 2026).
  • Creator and influencer contentAny payment, gift, loan, affiliate link or discount code makes a post an ad and it must say so up-front, in the content, not only in the bio. The ASA's 2025 research found 80% of inadequately disclosed ad content had no label at all (Lewis Silkin, May 2025).
  • Claims"Best in town", "cheapest", "guaranteed" and health or financial claims need evidence. We rewrite a post rather than publish one that can't be backed up.

What your monthly social media report shows

  • Followers gained and lost, and from where
  • Reach and engagement by post, with the three best and three worst and why
  • Messages and comments handled, with response times
  • Clicks to your website and calls or bookings that started on social, tracked in GA4
  • Enquiries that came through social, so the report says "4 quote requests" not "2,000 impressions"
  • What's planned next month, for your approval

No vanity metrics, no jargon, as our reviews keep saying.

How we take over your social media

  1. 1Audit and briefWe review your accounts, your competitors' and what your customers ask, and agree platforms, tone, what we may and may not say, and the response brief for messages.
  2. 2SetupProfiles completed or tidied, branding applied, scheduling and analytics connected, admin roles and two-factor authentication secured in your name so a departing staff member can't take your page with them.
  3. 3Content calendarA month of posts drafted and sent for approval, including any photo or video shoot. Our photography service covers product and premises shots if you have none.
  4. 4Go livePosting at the times your audience is active, with comments and messages monitored from day one on Growth and Full tiers.
  5. 5Monthly report, quarterly reviewWhat worked, what didn't, what changes. Every 90 days you decide whether to carry on, change tier or stop.

Socialmedia managementquestions, answered

How much does social media management cost in the UK?

UK prices run £150–£400 a month for a basic one-platform package, £500–£1,500 for a typical small-business service and £1,500–£3,000 or more with video production (Whito, 2026). Paid advertising management is normally priced separately at £600–£2,000 a month.

How often should a business post on social media?

Three to five times a week on your main platform is enough for most small businesses; daily is unnecessary unless you have the content to justify it. Consistency beats volume: a post every Tuesday and Friday for a year does more than a burst of twenty followed by silence. Stories and Reels can top this up.

Is paid advertising included in social media management?

Usually not, and it isn't in ours. Organic management keeps your accounts active; paid social targets an offer at an audience and is priced on its own, typically £600–£2,000 a month in UK agencies plus the ad spend. See our Meta Ads page. Keeping them separate means you can see what each one is costing.

How long before social media brings in customers?

Expect the first enquiries from social within one to three months if the accounts were dormant, faster if you already have followers. Social works mostly by reassurance: people who hear about you check your Facebook or Instagram before calling. The win shows up as more of those calls, not as a flood of direct messages.

Who owns the content and the accounts?

You do, always. Accounts are registered to your business email, you hold the admin role, and every image, video and caption we create is yours to keep and reuse. If you stop working with us we hand over the calendar and files; nothing is held back. Check this before signing with any agency.

Can an agency reply to customer messages for me?

Yes. On our Growth and Full tiers we answer routine comments and direct messages during business hours from a brief you approve, covering hours, prices, areas and how to book, and pass anything else straight to you . Complaints are acknowledged, taken private and handed to you, never argued in public.

Is Facebook still worth it for a UK business?

Yes, for most local businesses. Facebook or Messenger is used by 93% of UK adults (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025) and it reaches the homeowners and older customers who buy trades, healthcare and local services. Local groups and recommendation threads still send real enquiries. Younger consumer brands should weight Instagram or TikTok instead.

Should we use AI to write our social media posts?

As a drafting tool, yes; as the voice of your business, no. AI is useful for turning a photo shoot or a blog post into post variants quickly. What it can't do is know this week's job, the customer's name or the joke your regulars get. We use it to speed up drafts and keep a person editing every post.

Hand over the posting, keep the control

Tell us which platforms you're on and what's not getting done. We'll come back with the tier we'd recommend, what it includes and a price, with no obligation.
