How to choose a web developer in Nottingham
Nottingham has 570 information and communication businesses, the largest count of the four areas we serve (ONS via Nomis, March 2026), plus two universities and the in-house teams of Experian, Capital One and Boots. Finding someone who says they can code is easy; separating them is harder.
- Ask who writes the codeSome agencies resell work done elsewhere; ask to meet the developer. Ours are our own core team, working from The Long Eaton Hub.
- Ask who owns itUnder UK copyright law the developer owns code unless it is assigned in writing. We assign it on final payment.
- Ask about accessibilityWebAIM's 2025 scan found 94.8% of a million home pages failed WCAG 2. For a charity or sports body with Equality Act duties, that is legal exposure.
- Ask what happens to pluginsPatchstack logged 11,334 WordPress-ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% in plugins. Bespoke code removes that surface; it still needs maintaining.
- Ask for a local referenceOurs is below.
Do you need bespoke development, or a better WordPress site?
Go bespoke if…
- Customers or staff must log in and do something (book, pay, reorder, download)
- You have accessibility obligations and want the tools in the code, not an overlay
- You integrate with accounts, stock, CRM or payment systems
- Plugin conflicts, slowdowns or security scares are already costing you time
Stay on WordPress if…
- Your site is pages, a blog and an enquiry form
- You want to edit pages yourself with a familiar editor
- Your shop has a standard catalogue and checkout
- You're testing an idea and need it cheap
Bespoke starts from £5,000 against around £1,000 for a WordPress brochure site, and takes four to eight weeks rather than one to three. For Notts County Foundation it paid off because removing paid accessibility and donation plugins removed recurring fees. For a ten-page trade site it wouldn't.

Web developmentNottingham:questions answered
Not covered here? Call and ask. We reply within 24 hours.
What is the difference between web design and web development?
Web design is how the site looks and how pages are laid out; web development is the code behind it: logins, databases, bookings, integrations. Many Nottingham sites only need design on WordPress. You need development when the site must do something, as with Ready Steady Drive's booking system.
How much does bespoke web development cost in Nottingham?
Bespoke websites with Vimana Digital start from £5,000; portals, booking tools and integrations are quoted after discovery because the number of user types and systems drives the cost. UK agencies bill £850–£1,400 a day, which is why an agreed scope is worth more than a low opening number.
Can you take over a project another Nottingham developer started?
Yes, after a code review. We assess what exists, what is salvageable and who holds the accounts and repositories, then give you a written view before quoting. Webro's brief had been returned by a previous team; we delivered it in three weeks. Sometimes a rebuild is cheaper than a rescue.
Do you build in Laravel or just WordPress?
Both, plus Next.js, Node and plain PHP. Laravel is our framework of choice for applications because login, security and database handling are built in. Notts County Foundation's platform is PHP; NOPE Group's custom CMS is bespoke PHP. We pick the stack per project rather than selling one.
Can you work alongside our in-house IT team?
Yes. Several Nottingham firms have internal developers or a preferred platform, and we fit around them: agreed repositories, code review, documentation and a handover any competent developer can pick up. If your team is a .NET shop we'll say so rather than hand over a stack they can't maintain.
Does our website need to meet WCAG 2.2?
If you are a charity, sports body, school or public-facing organisation in Nottingham, treat it as yes: Equality Act duties apply, and since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act covers online sales to EU customers. We built Notts County Foundation's platform to WCAG 2.2 with accessibility tools coded in, not an overlay.
How long does a bespoke build take?
Four to eight weeks for a bespoke website or a focused application, longer for multi-system platforms. The Webro AI workflow took three weeks because scope was tight and decisions were quick. Content, data access and feedback turnaround cause more delay than coding.
Will we own the code?
Yes. Final payment transfers the source code, design files, repositories and hosting accounts to you, along with the documentation. Standard sites run on our hosting from £120 a year; applications go on AWS or Azure in an account you own. No proprietary platform, no licence back to us.
