Which digital marketing channel should you start with?

Google Search is used by 82% of UK adults and Facebook or Messenger by 93% (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025), so those two usually come first. TikTok comes last for most local service businesses.

What AI Overviews and zero-click search mean for your marketing

If your rankings look fine but enquiries have slipped, this is probably why.

  1. 30%

Around 30% of UK Google searches now show an AI Overview

And 53% of adults see them often. ChatGPT had 1.8 billion UK visits January–August 2025, against 368 million in all of 2024 (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025).

  2. 58%

When an AI Overview appears, the #1 organic result loses 58% of its clicks

Positions 2–10 fell from 50.8% to 19.4% of clicks (Ahrefs, 300,000 keywords, February 2026).

  3. 0.74%

Being cited inside the AI Overview reverses some of that

Seer Interactive saw clients' organic click-through rise from 0.74% to 1.02%, and paid from 7.89% to 11%, where the brand was named in the AI answer (10,000 keywords, February 2025).

  4. 26%

Ranking #1 doesn't get you cited

Only 20–26% of AI Overview links overlap with the top ten organic results, and each answer cites around 11 sources (Semrush, 200,000 keywords, July 2025). Citation is a separate target from ranking.

  5. No special markup is needed

Google states there is "no special schema.org structured data" or file required for AI features, and that AI Overview clicks are counted under the "Web" search type in Search Console and "tend to be higher quality" (Google Search Central, December 2025). Anyone selling an "llms.txt" package or "AI schema" is selling you nothing.

Our proof: Bradgate Financial Solutions, a mortgage specialist we built and optimise for, is referenced directly inside Google's AI Overview for a Leicester self-employed mortgage search. That came from answer-first pages written around specific mortgage circumstances, not a trick. See the Bradgate case study and AI search optimisation.

Why one plan beats five suppliers

A common set-up is an SEO company, an ads freelancer and someone in the office doing social, none of them talking to each other. The leaks are predictable:

  • Google Ads sends traffic to pages that weren't built to convertWe build the landing pages too, so Quality Score (Google's rating of how relevant your page is to the ad, which affects your cost per click) goes up and cost per lead comes down.
  • SEO finds the questions people ask; ads prove which ones buyA month of Google Ads search-term data tells us which keywords deserve a page before we spend months ranking for the wrong ones.
  • Reviews drive both map rankings and ad conversionsBrightLocal's 2026 survey found 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, so review collection goes into every plan.
  • One report, one numberCost per enquiry across every channel, not five dashboards each claiming the same lead.

What you'll see every month, and why you can leave

Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO says plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (Google Search Central, updated June 2026). We'd encourage you to read it before hiring anyone, us included.

Your monthly report shows:

  • Enquiries by channel (calls, forms, chats) and cost per enquiry
  • Search Console clicks and impressions, including AI Overview clicks
  • Rankings for the terms we agreed matter, not vanity keywords
  • Google Business Profile calls, directions and reviews
  • Ad spend, conversions, and what we changed and why, in plain English

Every 90 days we decide together whether to continue, change course or stop. The aim is that clients stay because the numbers say so, not because of a contract. To confirm: current retention figure if Vimana wants to state one

Digital marketingquestions,answered

Not covered here? Call and ask. We reply within 24 hours.

What does a digital marketing agency do?

A digital marketing agency brings customers to your business through online channels: search engines (SEO and Google Ads), social media (organic and paid), email and, increasingly, AI assistants. Vimana Digital plans the channel mix, builds the pages and campaigns, tracks every enquiry back to its source and reports the cost per lead monthly.

How much does digital marketing cost for a small business in the UK?

UK agencies typically charge £1,250–£3,500 a month per channel (Whito, 2026). Vimana Digital's local SEO starts from £400 a month and national SEO runs £1,000–£4,000. Our Google Ads, Meta and social management fees are being finalised ; the UK norm is 10–20% of ad spend or a flat monthly fee.

SEO, Google Ads or social: where should I start?

Start with the channel that matches your timeline. Google Ads brings leads within weeks and tells you which searches convert. SEO takes months but keeps working without ad spend. Social builds awareness and retargets people who've visited. Most small businesses do best with Google Ads first, SEO alongside, social later.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. We work on rolling monthly terms with one month's notice, and there's a review every 90 days where you decide whether to continue. Google itself warns against agencies that guarantee rankings; we'd rather earn the next month than lock you into twelve.

How long until digital marketing pays for itself?

Google Ads can produce enquiries within the first month if tracking and landing pages are right. Local SEO usually shows movement within one to three months; national SEO six to twelve. We set a target cost per enquiry at the start so "paying for itself" is a number we both watch, not a feeling.

Is SEO still worth it now Google shows AI Overviews?

Yes, but the work has changed. AI Overviews cut clicks to the top result by up to 58% (Ahrefs, 2026), yet businesses cited inside the answer see click-through rise (Seer, 2025). We now write answer-first pages and build author and business signals so you're the source the AI names, not just a blue link.

How do you report on results across channels?

One monthly report showing enquiries by channel, cost per enquiry, Search Console clicks including AI Overview clicks, Google Business Profile actions, ad performance and what we changed. Calls and forms are tracked to source. You see the same numbers we do, explained without jargon, and we discuss direction every 90 days.

Do I need a new website before marketing?

Not always, but sometimes. If your site loads slowly on a phone, has no clear calls to action or can't be edited, ads will leak money and SEO will stall. Our free audit tells you honestly whether to fix, rebuild or go ahead. We build websites too, so the advice isn't a sales trick.

What questions should I ask any marketing agency?

Google's own list is a good start: can you show examples, do you follow Google's guidelines, what results do you expect and when, and what experience do you have in my industry? Add three more: who owns the ad accounts, is there a mark-up on spend, and what happens if I leave?

What's the difference between a digital marketing agency and an SEO agency?

An SEO agency works on one channel: organic search. A digital marketing agency plans across search, paid ads, social, email and AI search and tracks them together. Vimana Digital does both; if SEO alone is the right answer for you, that's what we'll recommend.
