How AI Overviews have changed the SEO job

Ranking first is no longer the whole game. Three facts shape how we work now:

SEO Agency SEO Company
  1. 1The top organic result is not automatically the cited oneAcross 200,000 US keywords, the #1 organic page appeared in only 46% of AI Overviews on desktop and 34% on mobile, and each answer cited around 11 sources (Semrush, July 2025). Citation is a separate target, so every commercial page we write opens with a short answer an AI can quote.
  2. 2When an AI summary shows, more people leave without clicking26% of searches with an AI summary ended the session, against 16% without (Pew Research Center, July 2025). The clicks you do get are worth more, and being named in the answer matters more.
  3. 3Google asks for nothing specialIts documentation says there is "no special schema.org structured data" or file needed for AI features, and AI Overview clicks are counted under the "Web" search type in Search Console (Google Search Central, December 2025). You don't need an "AI schema" package.

Google Search is still used by 82% of UK adults, roughly 3 billion searches a month (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025). GEO and AEO (generative and answer engine optimisation) adapt to how those results now read. Both are part of every national campaign, and available separately as AI search optimisation.

How much does SEO cost in the UK?

UK agencies typically charge £1,000–£5,000 a month for SME retainers (Wiseguy XL and Whito, 2026 guides); under about £400 a month is almost always automated, templated work (Whitehat SEO, 2026). Our prices sit inside those ranges and have been published here for years:

True of every price.

  • No long-term contract

Rolling monthly with one month's notice. We expect improvement within three months; if not, you leave.

  • You own everything

Content, accounts, Search Console, analytics; it all goes with you.

  • No guarantees of position

Google's guidance says "no one can guarantee a #1 ranking" (Google Search Central, June 2026). Anyone promising one is the warning sign Google describes.

"No sales jargon, or pushiness, and very reasonable pricing." — Charlotte Allen

How long does SEO take, and how will you know it's working?

Local campaigns usually move within one to three months; national ones take six to twelve, longer in crowded sectors and on new domains.

Your monthly report shows:

  • Enquiries from organic search: calls, forms and chats, tracked to the page that produced them
  • Search Console clicks and impressions, including AI Overview clicks under "Web"
  • Rankings for the keyword groups we agreed, not a vanity list
  • Pages published, links earned and technical issues fixed
  • Google Business Profile calls, directions and new reviews, where local is in scope
  • A plain-English note on what's next

Every 90 days we review the numbers and decide together: continue, adjust or stop.

How an SEO campaign runs with us

  1. 1Free auditYou send your website address. We send back the three issues costing you the most visibility, in plain English, with no obligation.
  2. 2Research and planKeyword groups by buying intent, competitor gaps, and a page-by-page plan with a target cost per enquiry.
  3. 3Fix the foundationsTechnical problems, tracking, Google Business Profile and the pages closest to producing enquiries. If the site itself is the problem we say so; we build websites too, so it isn't a sales trick.
  4. 4Publish and earnNew and rewritten pages each month, written to be read by people and quoted by AI; links and mentions earned from relevant sources.
  5. 5Report and reviewMonthly numbers, a 90-day decision point, and a strategy that changes when the data says so.

How much does SEO cost in the UK?

Most UK agencies charge £1,000–£5,000 a month for small and medium businesses (Whito and Wiseguy XL, 2026). Vimana Digital charges from £400 a month for local SEO, £1,000–£4,000 for national campaigns and typically £5,000–£10,000 for global work. Every quote shows what the money buys each month.

How long does SEO take to work?

Local SEO usually shows movement within one to three months. National SEO takes six to twelve months to produce material results, and longer in competitive sectors. New domains are slower than established ones. We expect visible improvement within three months of starting; if there isn't any, you're free to leave.

Do I have to sign a contract for SEO?

No. We work on rolling monthly terms with one month's notice. There's a review every 90 days where you decide whether to continue. We'd rather keep earning the next month than lock you into twelve, and Google itself warns against agencies that lean on guarantees and tie-ins.

Will my rankings disappear if I stop SEO?

Not immediately. Pages, links and your Google Business Profile keep working after the invoices stop. Rankings drift over months as competitors keep publishing and Google's algorithm changes, so most clients continue at a lower level rather than stopping outright. Everything we build stays yours either way.

Can an SEO agency guarantee page one on Google?

No, and Google says so plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (Google Search Central, 2026). Rankings depend on competitors, algorithm updates and the searcher's location and device. We commit to a plan, a timeline and honest monthly reporting, not to a position nobody can control.

How do you measure SEO success?

By enquiries first: calls, form fills and chats tracked back to organic search and to the page that produced them. Then Search Console clicks and impressions, including AI Overview clicks, rankings for the agreed keyword groups, and Google Business Profile actions. Traffic that doesn't produce enquiries isn't success, and we won't report it as such.

Is SEO still worth it now Google shows AI Overviews?

Yes, with a changed playbook. Semrush found the #1 organic page appears in only 46% of AI Overviews on desktop (2025), so citation and ranking are separate targets. We write answer-first pages, strengthen author and business signals, and track AI Overview clicks in Search Console. The businesses being cited gain visibility; the ones ignoring it lose clicks.

Should I do SEO or Google Ads?

Both, if you can; Google Ads first if you need leads this month. Ads produce enquiries within weeks and reveal which searches convert; SEO takes months but keeps working without ad spend. Most of our clients run ads for signal while SEO builds, then reduce spend as organic enquiries grow. See PPC management.

Does my website need to be rebuilt before SEO?

Not usually, but sometimes. A site that's slow on mobile, can't be edited or has no clear structure will hold a campaign back whatever we do. Our audit tells you plainly whether to fix or rebuild. If a rebuild is right, website migration SEO makes sure you don't lose what already ranks.
