What kind of website do you need?

Government figures show 78% of UK businesses now have a website, up from 68% in 2023–24, but only 76% of sole traders and 84% of micro-businesses (DSIT, UK Business Data Survey 2026). If you're in the gap, or your site isn't bringing in work, here's what we build:

Should your website be WordPress, WooCommerce or bespoke?

A content management system (CMS) is the admin area you log into to change your website. The right one depends on what you need to change, how often, and what the site must do beyond showing pages.

WordPress runs roughly four in ten websites (W3Techs, October 2026). Common isn't the same as right. We built Doors Doors Doors on WordPress because it fitted, and Notts County Foundation in PHP because a charity with WCAG 2.2 obligations needed accessibility built in, not bolted on. How much do web design services cost in the UK?

Most UK agencies don't publish prices. We do, because a quote you can't predict is a quote you can't plan for.

How a website project runs with us

Notts County Foundation Website Homepage
  1. 1Call and brief (day 1)A 20–30 minute conversation about your customers and what the site must do. Written quote within.
  2. 2Content gathering (week 1)You send logos, text, photos and examples you like. Nothing? We write and shoot it. This stage sets the timeline more than anything else.
  3. 3Design (weeks 1–2)You see page designs before any code is written and give feedback in plain English.
  4. 4Build and test (weeks 2–3)We build, load content, connect forms and tracking, and test on real phones. Ecommerce and bespoke projects typically take four to eight weeks.
  5. 5Launch and handoverWe go live, submit the site to Google and show you how to make changes. Then run it yourself, or keep us on for website management.

Built for speed, accessibility and the rules that now apply

Each point says what it means for you.

Core Web Vitals: the three targets every build is tested against.
  1. We build to pass Google's Core Web Vitals

Google's three speed and stability measures: main content loading in under 2.5 seconds, taps answered within 200 milliseconds, nothing jumping about as the page loads. Google says these are "used by our ranking systems" (Google Search Central, 2024).

  2. Mobile is the version Google reads

Mobile-first indexing completed on 31 October 2023, and Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 found UK adults spend about four and a half hours a day online, mostly on a smartphone.

  3. Accessibility built in, to WCAG 2.2 AA

WebAIM's 2025 scan found 94.8% of the top million home pages fail WCAG, averaging 51 errors each. The commonest are low-contrast text, missing image descriptions and unlabelled forms. For Notts County Foundation we fixed all of those with tools we coded ourselves, not a monthly overlay.

  4. Selling to EU customers? Accessibility became law on 28 June 2025

The European Accessibility Act covers ecommerce sold to EU consumers wherever the business sits. Penalties vary by country, so ignore any agency quoting a headline fine.

  5. Cookie consent done properly

The ICO updated its cookie guidance on 29 April 2026 after the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, adding exceptions for statistical, appearance and emergency purposes. We configure consent around what your site actually uses.

  6. Fewer plugins, fewer problems

Patchstack logged 11,334 new WordPress-ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2025, up 42%; 91% were in plugins and only six, all low priority, in WordPress itself. We code core features ourselves and keep plugin counts low, and it's why updates matter after launch.

  7. Every build passes our website testing and QA checklist before launch.

Your website belongs to you

Under UK copyright law, whoever writes the code owns it unless it's assigned in writing. That is how some agencies end up "licensing" businesses their own websites. We don't work that way: the design and code are assigned to you on final payment.

Three of the seven questions to ask before hiring a web design agency are about ownership. Ask them of anyone you're comparing us with.

Who owns it

  • The domain name is registered in your nameYou
  • You get full admin access to the site, hosting and analytics accountsYou
  • Design and code are assigned to you on final paymentYou
  • If you leave, you take the site, content and files with you, with no exit feeYou
  • Hosting and management are optional and separate from the build priceYour choice

How much does a professional website cost in the UK?

Most UK agencies quote £3,000–£10,000 for a business website and £10,000 or more for ecommerce. Vimana Digital's small business websites start from around £1,000, medium to large sites typically run £3,000–£6,000, and complex or bespoke platforms from £5,000. Every quote lists exactly what's included.

How long does it take to build a website?

Straightforward business websites are usually live within one to three weeks once the brief and content are agreed, because design, copy, photography and development are planned together from the start. Ecommerce and bespoke platforms typically take four to eight weeks, depending on features, integrations and how quickly feedback comes back.

Should my website be WordPress or custom-built?

WordPress suits most brochure and content-led sites where you want to edit pages yourself. A bespoke build in PHP, Laravel or Next.js makes sense when you need portals, calculators, custom content systems or tight integrations, or want to avoid plugin dependency. We recommend the platform around the project, never the reverse.

Do I own my website once it's built?

Yes. The domain is registered in your name, you receive full admin access, and design and code are assigned to you on final payment. If you ever move on, you take the site, content and files with you. We don't licence websites back to clients or hold accounts hostage.

Will my new website rank on Google?

Every site is built with SEO foundations: clean structure, fast loading, mobile-first layouts, sensible headings and schema markup. That gives you the best possible start, but rankings depend on competition and ongoing work, so we also offer SEO campaigns if you want to grow organic visibility after launch.

Will I lose rankings if I redesign my existing website?

Not if the migration is planned. We map every existing URL, keep or redirect each one, preserve content and metadata, and monitor Search Console after launch. Rankings drop after redesigns mainly when URLs change without redirects or content disappears, and both are avoidable. See our website migration SEO service.

Can I update the website myself?

Yes. On WordPress we set the editor up around what you actually need to change and provide training. On bespoke builds we include a custom content panel so everyday updates don't need a developer. If you'd rather not touch it, our website management service handles changes for you.

Is the website mobile-friendly and fast?

Yes. Ofcom reports most UK adults' online time is on a smartphone, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site. We design mobile-first and build to pass Google's Core Web Vitals: main content loading in under 2.5 seconds, taps responding within 200 milliseconds, and no layout jumping.

Does my website need to be accessible?

Accessibility is good practice for everyone and a legal consideration for many. UK organisations have Equality Act duties, and since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act applies to businesses selling online to EU customers. We build to WCAG 2.2 AA and delivered a fully WCAG 2.2 platform for Notts County Foundation.

What happens after the website goes live?

You can manage the site yourself or keep us on. Hosting starts from £120 a year with SSL included, and website management from £50 a month paid annually, covering updates, backups, security monitoring and small changes. SEO, Google Ads, content and further development are there when you need them.
