Ecommerce web design is the design and build of an online shop: product pages, basket, checkout, payments, accounts and the admin behind them. Vimana Digital builds WooCommerce and bespoke shops for UK product businesses, trade suppliers and bookable services. Ecommerce builds start from around £3,000 and typically take four to eight weeks.

What kind of online shop do you need?
Ecommerce is the part of our web design services where the build has to match the business most closely. The shops we build most often:

- Product ranges with optionssize, colour, pack quantity or finish chosen before checkout. Ultrabond Adhesives, Emma Harris.
- Trade and B2B shopscustomer accounts, saved details and repeat ordering for buyers who come back every month.
- Large specialist catalogues6,000+ products searchable by product and manufacturing code on the Donaldson Filters store.
- Bookable services with paymentlessons, appointments or courses paid online, with a simple admin. Ready Steady Drive, Unique Sculpt.
- Shops where stock never stands stillmotorcycles and parts added, sold and replaced by the team at Links Motorcycles.
- Multilingual and internationala WooCommerce course shop with a language switcher and secure payment gateway for Serendipity Training Group; a UK supplier with global aspirations for The Mani Club.
One honest exception: when every product is made to order, we may tell you not to build a shop. Riviere Custom Coffee Tables got a consultation-led brochure site instead of an "Add to basket" button, because a basket would have removed the personalisation customers pay for.
WooCommerce, bespoke or Shopify: which should your shop use?
WooCommerce is the shop plugin for WordPress; "bespoke" means we write the shop in PHP, Laravel or Next.js around your exact rules. Shopify is a hosted platform you rent monthly.

| WooCommerce | Bespoke (PHP, Laravel, Next.js) | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Up to a few thousand products, standard checkout, you edit products | Trade pricing, portals, code-based search, stock or ERP integrations | Simple consumer shops happy to pay monthly fees |
| Typical Vimana cost | From around £3,000 | From £5,000+ | |
| Who owns it | You: files, database, domain | You: files, database, domain | You own content; the platform is rented |
| Watch out for | Plugin sprawl (see Section 7) | Higher upfront cost; developer needed for new features | Lock-in; limited control over checkout and URLs |
We build on WooCommerce when it fits and bespoke when the shop has to do something a plugin can't. Donaldson Filters needed search by manufacturing code across thousands of lines; Unique Sculpt needed a booking calendar for paid consultations, so WordPress did the job. Why the checkout and account design decide whether a shop makes money
Across 50 separate studies, the average documented cart abandonment rate is 70.22%, and better checkout design alone can lift a large site's conversions by 35.26% (Baymard Institute, updated September 2025). So we spend design time on the last three screens, not just the home page:
- Guest checkout by defaultWith the option to create an account after paying rather than before.
- Delivery costs shown earlyUnexpected extra costs at checkout are among the most common reasons shoppers give for abandoning a basket in Baymard's survey, so shipping rules belong on the product page, not in the small print.
- Trade accounts for repeat buyersFor Ultrabond, returning professional customers log in and reorder without starting again. The second, third and tenth order should be easier than the first.
- Payment choiceCard, PayPal and the wallets your customers already use. To confirm: confirm which payment gateways Vimana typically integrates
Building the shop means building the catalogue too
A shop with an empty catalogue is a demo. The product data work is usually the biggest hidden cost in an ecommerce project, so we quote for it and often do it ourselves:

- Product uploads and variationsWe populated the Ultrabond range so the store could sell from day one.
- Search that matches how buyers thinkIndustrial buyers search by part number; fashion buyers browse by collection, size and colour. The Donaldson store supports keyword, product-code and manufacturing-code search; Emma Harris is structured by collection, category, colour and size.
- Photography and copy for the shopConsistent product shots through our photography service; we wrote every word for The Mani Club.
- An admin the owner can actually useLinks Motorcycles maintains its own changing stock; Emma Harris no longer needs a developer to add a product.

Built for speed, mobile and the rules that apply to online shops

- Speed is revenueA 0.1-second improvement in mobile site speed lifted retail conversions by 8.4% in a 37-brand study (Deloitte Digital for Google, 2020). We build to pass Google's Core Web Vitals: main content loading in under 2.5 seconds, taps answered within 200 milliseconds, no layout jumping while images load.
- Mobile is where shopping happensGoogle indexes the mobile version of your shop (mobile-first indexing completed 31 October 2023), and Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 found most UK online time is spent on a smartphone. Product page, basket and checkout are designed for a thumb first.
- Selling to EU consumers? Accessibility became law on 28 June 2025The European Accessibility Act covers ecommerce sold to EU customers wherever the business sits. We build to WCAG 2.2 AA; micro-business exemptions exist.
- Cookies and tracking done properlyShops run analytics, ad pixels and abandoned-basket tools, so consent is configured to the ICO's guidance as updated on 29 April 2026, around what your shop actually uses.
- Fewer plugins on WooCommercePatchstack logged 11,334 new WordPress-ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% of them in plugins. Shops attract plugins, so we keep the count low and code core features ourselves.
Every shop passes our website testing and QA checklist, including real test orders on real phones, before launch.

How an ecommerce project runs
Four to eight weeks is typical; catalogue size and how quickly product data arrives set the pace. After launch, ecommerce SEO and Google Ads bring customers to the shop, and website migration SEO covers replacing an existing store without losing its rankings.
- 1Call and shop brief (day 1)What you sell, who buys it, how they search, how you ship and take payment. Written quote within To confirm: quote turnaround.
- 2Catalogue audit (week 1)Where product data lives (spreadsheet, supplier feed, someone's head) and how it gets into the shop.
- 3Design (weeks 1–2)Home, category, product, basket and checkout designs for review before any code is written.
- 4Build and populate (weeks 2–6)Shop build, payment and shipping set-up, product uploads, photography and copy where chosen.

How much does an ecommerce website cost in the UK?
UK agencies commonly quote £10,000–£25,000 for an ecommerce website, with some starting at £30,000. Vimana Digital's ecommerce builds start from around £3,000 for a standard WooCommerce shop, £3,000–£6,000 with accounts, variations or booking, and £5,000+ for bespoke or large-catalogue platforms. Every quote lists what's included.
How long does it take to build an online shop?
Most ecommerce websites take four to eight weeks from agreed brief to launch. The biggest variable is product data: a shop with 60 products and good photos is quicker than one with 6,000 lines in a supplier spreadsheet. Booking sites and small WooCommerce shops can be faster once content is ready.
WooCommerce or Shopify: which is better for a small UK business?
WooCommerce suits businesses that want to own their shop outright, control checkout and URLs, and avoid monthly platform fees. Shopify suits simple consumer shops where paying a subscription and app fees for convenience is acceptable. We build on WooCommerce and bespoke platforms and will tell you honestly if Shopify fits better.
Can you build a trade or B2B ecommerce website?
Yes. Trade shops need customer accounts, saved details, repeat ordering and sometimes customer-specific pricing. We built Ultrabond Adhesives with trade accounts and repeat ordering, and the Donaldson Filters store for AB Components with search by product and manufacturing code across thousands of industrial parts.
Can I add and edit products myself?
Yes. Every shop we build includes an admin area for products, prices, stock and orders, and we train you on it at handover. Links Motorcycles adds bikes and parts as stock changes; Emma Harris manages a large lingerie catalogue without calling a developer. If you'd rather not, we can manage it.
Can you move my existing shop to a new website without losing sales?
Yes, with a planned migration. We map every product, category and URL, redirect anything that changes, carry over customer accounts and order history where the platforms allow, and monitor Search Console after launch. Our website migration SEO service covers this in detail for shops replacing an older platform.
Is the shop secure and PCI compliant?
Card details are handled by the payment provider, such as Stripe or PayPal, so they never touch your server, which keeps your PCI obligations minimal . Every shop has an SSL certificate at no charge, hardened admin access and, on WooCommerce, a deliberately short plugin list with updates managed through our maintenance service.
Do I own my ecommerce website?
Yes. The domain is in your name, you have full admin access, and the design, code and product data are yours on final payment. If you leave, you take the shop, customer data and files with you. We don't rent websites back to clients.
