Is TikTok advertising right for your business?

We'd rather lose the sale than run a campaign that can't work. Here's the honest split.

TikTok ads tend to work for

Food-Photography
  • Consumer products with a visual payofffood, drink, beauty, fashion, homeware, gadgets, anything that looks good being unboxed or used
  • Online shops that can use TikTok Shopselling inside the app removes the click-to-website drop-off
  • Hospitality, events and venuesrestaurants, bars, festivals, escape rooms, anything people go to with friends
  • Recruitmentreaching younger candidates for retail, hospitality, care and apprenticeship roles
  • Brands with a personality and someone willing to be on camerathe founder, the chef, the fitter. If you already post organically, Spark Ads can amplify what works

TikTok ads are usually the wrong first choice for

  • Emergency and urgent servicesnobody finds a locksmith by scrolling; that demand lives on Google Ads
  • Most professional servicessolicitors, accountants, financial advisers; the audience is there but the intent isn't
  • B2B with a long sales cycleLinkedIn, Google and email do this job better
  • Businesses with no capacity to make videoone polished advert won't survive a week on TikTok; the platform rewards volume and variety
  • Very small budgetsunder the platform's minimums the account can't exit the learning phase; the money is better spent on Meta or search

Most UK marketing guides say the same: start with Google and Meta, add TikTok once those are profitable. Our digital marketing page has the channel-by-goal table.

Who you reach with TikTok ads in the UK

Clothing Photography
  • 26.8 million adults aged 18 and over can be reached with TikTok ads in the UK, 48.4% of the adult population (DataReportal, Digital 2026: United Kingdom, 5 November 2025)
  • The ad audience is around 61.5% female; Facebook reaches 38.8 million and Instagram 35.5 million (same source), so TikTok is the third-largest paid social audience, not a niche
  • TikTok's ad tools only target users 18 and over, but Ofcom reports heavy use among under-16s, so age-restricted products face extra rules

The practical point: TikTok is no longer teenagers only. It's still the youngest-skewing major platform, and creative has to match how people behave on it.

TikTok ad formats, explained

  • In-Feed adsstandard video ads in the For You feed with a call-to-action button. The default format.
  • Spark Adsboost an organic post from your own account or a creator's, keeping the likes and comments. Often the strongest format because it doesn't look like an ad.
  • Lead generation adsan in-app form, like Meta's lead ads. Good for recruitment, course sign-ups and quote requests.
  • TikTok Shop adsproduct cards and live-shopping promotion for brands selling inside TikTok Shop; shoppable video with checkout in the app.
  • Creator partnerships via TikTok's creator marketplace — pairing your product with creators who already have the audience, with the commission label applied automatically.

Brand takeovers and TopView (the ad shown on opening the app) exist but are priced for national brands.

  • Realistic UK test budget

    • Agency guidance

UK agencies charge much as they do for Meta: 10–20% of spend or a flat retainer (Advertizingly, 2026). As with every platform we manage.

  • You own the TikTok Ads Manager account, the pixel and the audiences

  • No mark-up on ad spend; TikTok bills you directly

  • Rolling monthly terms with one month's notice, and a 90-day decision point

The maths in plain terms: £750 a month at a £6 CPM is about 125,000 views. At a 1% click rate that's 1,250 visits; at a 2% purchase rate, 25 orders. Whether 25 orders pays for the ads and the fee depends on your margin, which is the first thing we'll ask about.

The creative demand, honestly

TikTok is a creative treadmill. An ad that works wears out quickly, often within weeks, as it reaches everyone likely to respond, so we plan for three to five new videos every fortnight. That's the real cost of TikTok, and why the fit test above matters more than any budget figure.

What tends to work:

  • Native-looking vertical videoshot on a phone, with on-screen captions and no logo in the first three seconds
  • A hook in the first seconda question, a price, a surprising result, a "don't buy X until you've seen this"
  • Real peoplethe founder, staff, customers. On TikTok, people-led content usually beats studio polish
  • Formats that repeatbehind the scenes, "how it's made", before and after, reply-to-comment videos

We can script and direct owner-shot video and source UK creators, and our photography service covers product stills for TikTok Shop listings. Whichever route, plan on someone from your business being visible.

Rules for TikTok advertising in the UK

  • DisclosureAny paid, gifted or commission-based creator content is an ad under the CAP Code and must be labelled clearly in the video itself, not only in a caption or bio. TikTok's "Paid partnership" and commission labels help, but responsibility sits with the brand. The CMA can now fine directly under the DMCC Act 2024 (RPC, January 2026).
  • Age-restricted productsAlcohol, gambling, vaping, HFSS food and drink and cosmetic procedures all carry extra restrictions on TikTok and under the CAP Code, and some can't be advertised to a predominantly young audience at all.
  • Online Safety ActOfcom's 2026 consultation on fraudulent-advertising codes would require the largest platforms, TikTok included, to verify advertiser identities and check FCA authorisation for financial advertisers (Wiggin; RPC, 2026).
  • MusicBusiness accounts only get TikTok's commercial sound library; a chart track in an ad without a licence is a takedown waiting to happen.

How we track TikTok ads and what you see each month

We install the TikTok Pixel and the Events API (server-side tracking that works when the browser blocks the pixel), or connect your WooCommerce or Shopify store for TikTok Shop. The monthly report shows spend, views, click-through rate, cost per lead or purchase, return on ad spend, and which creatives are winning and wearing out.

One caveat: TikTok's reported conversions, like Meta's, will exceed what your store or CRM shows, because the platform counts views and modelled conversions. Platform figures are the trend; your sales data is the truth.

How a TikTok campaign starts

  1. 1Fit callWe go through the fit test honestly. If TikTok isn't the right first channel, we point you to Meta Ads or Google and stop there.
  2. 2NumbersProduct, price, margin and the cost per order or lead that makes the campaign worthwhile.
  3. 3Account and trackingTikTok Ads Manager in your name, pixel and Events API, catalogue connection if you sell online.
  4. 4Creative planWho's on camera, what formats, how many videos a fortnight, who makes them.
  5. 5Launch and learnFirst batch of 6–10 videos, two or three audiences, budget above the platform minimum.
  6. 6Fortnightly refresh, monthly report, 90-day reviewWinners scaled, tired creatives retired, go or stop decision at 90 days.

How much do TikTok ads cost in the UK?

UK TikTok ads typically cost £3–£12 per 1,000 views and £0.30–£1.50 per click, rising 20–40% around Black Friday and Christmas (Influee, 2026) . The platform requires at least $50 a day per campaign and $20 a day per ad group. A realistic UK test is £500–£1,000 a month of spend plus the management fee.

What is the minimum budget for TikTok ads?

TikTok sets a minimum of $50 a day at campaign level and $20 a day per ad group, with a lifetime ad group minimum of $20 multiplied by the number of days (TikTok Ads Help). In practice you need enough budget for roughly 50 conversions a week so the algorithm settles, which usually means more than the minimum.

Do TikTok ads work for small businesses?

Yes for small consumer brands, food and drink, beauty, hospitality and recruitment, provided someone can make short video every week. No, usually, for trades, professional services and B2B, where Google Ads and Meta deliver cheaper leads. We run a fit check before taking any TikTok budget and will say which side you fall on.

What are Spark Ads?

Spark Ads turn an existing organic TikTok post, yours or a creator's with their permission, into a paid ad while keeping its likes, comments and shares. Because they look like normal content and carry social proof, they often outperform ads uploaded directly to Ads Manager. They'd be our first choice for brands already posting.

Do I need to make videos for TikTok ads?

Yes, and regularly. Static images barely work on TikTok, and a single video wears out within weeks. Plan on three to five new clips a fortnight, shot on a phone, with someone from the business visible. We can script owner-shot video and source UK creators if nobody in-house wants to be on camera .

How long do TikTok ads take to show results?

Views and clicks arrive within hours; a reliable cost per order or lead takes three to six weeks, because TikTok's learning phase needs a run of conversions per ad group and the first creatives need testing. Judge the channel at 90 days, with creative refreshed throughout, not on the first week's numbers.

Do TikTok ads need an #ad disclosure?

Yes, whenever a creator is paid, gifted or on commission. The CAP Code requires the ad to be obvious in the content itself, so TikTok's "Paid partnership" or commission label plus a spoken or on-screen "ad" is the safe route. Brand-run ads in Ads Manager are labelled "Sponsored" by the platform automatically.

Is TikTok better than Facebook or Instagram for advertising?

Neither is better in general; they reach different people differently. Facebook reaches 38.8 million UK users and skews older; TikTok reaches 26.8 million adults and skews younger with far higher creative demands (DataReportal, November 2025). For most small businesses we'd start on Meta, prove a cost per lead, then test TikTok with the winning angle.
