Bespoke CMS development means a content management system built around the content your team actually maintains, with the functionality your site needs (bookings, calculators, portals, catalogues) coded in rather than bolted on with plugins. Vimana Digital builds custom and headless CMS platforms in PHP, Laravel and Next.js. Bespoke websites start from £5,000 and typically take four to eight weeks. Prices exclude VAT.

WordPress vs headless vs bespoke CMS: which do you need?
WordPress runs around 40% of all websites and is right for most brochure sites and blogs; we build those through WordPress web design. The question is what happens when the site has to do something.

| WordPress | Headless CMS | Bespoke CMS (Vimana) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Pages and posts with a familiar editor; features added by plugins | Content stored in a system and served by API to a separate front end (e.g. Next.js, a mobile app) | An admin panel and site built around your content model, traditional or headless |
| Best for | Brochure sites, blogs, standard shops your team edits daily | Publishing to several channels; very fast front ends; large editorial teams | Sites with logic: bookings, calculators, portals, big catalogues, unusual content types |
| Editor experience | Generic; often cluttered by plugins | Structured but abstract; preview needs setting up | Only the fields you use; previews, roles and scheduling built to your workflow |
| Security surface | Core is solid; plugins are the risk | Smaller; front end is static or server-rendered | No plugin surface; one maintainer (see Section 4) |
| Performance and SEO control | Depends on theme and plugins | Excellent, if the front end is built well | Full control: templates, schema, redirects, sitemaps are yours |
| Lock-in | Low; any WordPress developer | Low to medium; depends on the CMS vendor | Low: you own the code; any PHP or Node developer |
Is a bespoke CMS more secure than WordPress? Yes, with one honest caveat
Patchstack counted 11,334 new WordPress-ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2025, 42% more than in 2024. Plugins accounted for 91% and themes 9%, while WordPress core had just six, all low priority; 17% were high severity and 46% had no patch available when disclosed (Patchstack, 2026). The lesson isn't "WordPress is insecure". It's that every plugin is a door someone else is responsible for locking.

A bespoke CMS has no plugin surface. Login, uploads, forms and payments are coded once, reviewed, and protected by the framework's built-in defences against common attacks.
The caveat competitors leave out: a bespoke CMS has one maintainer instead of a global community of thousands patching plugins. If nobody updates the framework and server, it ages just like an unpatched WordPress site. We deal with that in three ways:
- Mainstream frameworks only(Laravel, Next.js), with published security windows, so updates are routine. See Laravel development for current support dates.
- A support plancovering framework and dependency updates, monitoring and backups, under website management To confirm: Vimana to confirm bespoke plan.
- Fewer moving partsA bespoke CMS runs the features you need and nothing else, so the update list is short.
Not sure whether your site needs bespoke? Send us the URL and the three things it can't do. We'll tell you whether it's a plugin, a WordPress rebuild or a custom CMS, within 24 hours.

Standard on every build:
- Pages, sections and menuswith the fields your content actually has, not a blank box and a prayer.
- Media librarywith automatic image sizes, compression and alt-text prompts.
- Roles and approvalseditors draft, managers publish; audit trail of who changed what.
- Preview and schedulingsee it before it's live; publish at 9am Monday without being at a desk.
- SEO fieldstitles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, schema, automatic XML sitemaps, and a redirects manager so a changed URL never 404s.
- Formswith spam protection and submissions stored, not just emailed.
Modules we've built as part of a CMS:
- CalculatorsNOPE's emissions calculator estimates the difference of switching from a prospect's current usage, used in sales meetings as well as on the site.
- Bookings and paymentsReady Steady Drive's learners choose transmission, lesson and slot and pay online; the team manages bookings, customers and lesson options from a deliberately simple panel.
- Customer portalstrade accounts and repeat ordering for Ultrabond Adhesives.
- Large catalogues6,000-plus Donaldson products searchable by keyword, product code and manufacturing code for AB Components.
- Donations and CRMbespoke donation software and a CRM inside the Notts County Foundation platform, replacing two subscriptions.
Headless CMS development: when it's worth it
Headless means the content lives in one system and is delivered by API to whatever front end you like: a Next.js website, a mobile app, a partner's site. We build headless when you publish to more than one channel or front-end speed is a commercial priority. The honest cost: two codebases, two deployments, and previews that need deliberate setting up. For a single website with one audience, a traditional bespoke CMS is usually cheaper, and we'll say so.

Moving to a bespoke CMS without losing your Google rankings
Rankings fall after a replatform for two avoidable reasons: URLs change without redirects, and content or metadata quietly disappears. Our process, the same one applied to our own site rebuild:
- 1Inventory every URLIncluding images, PDFs and old posts, with traffic and backlinks.
- 2Preserve one-to-oneWherever possible. A new CMS does not require new URLs.
- 3Map the exceptionsTo 301 redirects, approved in writing before launch.
- 4Carry overTitles, meta descriptions, headings, schema, alt text and internal links, and check them, not assume them.
- 5Launch and monitorIn Search Console for crawl errors, 404s and ranking changes, with a rollback plan for the first fortnight.
Accessibility built into the CMS, not overlaid on top
94.8% of the top million home pages fail WCAG 2 (WebAIM, 2025), and since 28 June 2025 the European Accessibility Act applies to businesses selling online to EU consumers (European Commission). A bespoke CMS lets us get this right in the code: enforced alt text, heading structure, contrast-checked templates, keyboard-operable components and visible focus states.
For Notts County Foundation we built the platform to WCAG 2.2 and developed an in-house accessibility toolkit (contrast and saturation, text size and spacing, dyslexia-friendly font, reading mask, animation controls) instead of a paid overlay widget, removing a monthly fee and giving the charity control over how the controls behave.

Not covered here? Call and ask. We reply within 24 hours.
Is a bespoke CMS worth it, or should I just use WordPress?
WordPress is right for most brochure sites and blogs, and we build plenty. A bespoke CMS is worth it when the site has to do something: calculators, bookings, portals, large catalogues, or when you need tighter security with no plugin surface and performance or SEO control a theme can't give you.
What's the difference between a headless CMS and a bespoke CMS?
A headless CMS stores content and serves it through an API to a separate front end, such as a Next.js site or a mobile app. A bespoke CMS is built around your content model and can be traditional or headless. We choose headless when you publish to several channels or need a very fast front end.
Is a custom CMS more secure than WordPress?
It has far fewer attack routes. Patchstack logged 11,334 WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% in plugins and 46% without a patch at disclosure. A bespoke CMS has no plugin surface, but it relies on one maintainer rather than a community, so we offset that with framework updates, monitoring and backups under a support plan.
How much does a bespoke CMS cost in the UK?
Published UK ranges run from about £3,000 for a simple custom back end to £50,000+ for enterprise systems, over 6 to 30 weeks (Intelivita, 2026). Bespoke websites with Vimana, including a custom CMS, start from £5,000; modules such as a calculator or booking engine are priced separately .
Can non-technical staff update the website?
Yes, that's the point. We design the editing screens around the content you actually maintain, with roles, approval, previews and scheduling, rather than a generic back end full of options nobody uses. NOPE's team manages products and messaging through a panel built for their business, and Ready Steady Drive manages bookings the same way.
Can you migrate our existing site without losing rankings?
Yes. We inventory every URL, keep them one-to-one wherever possible, map any that must change with 301 redirects, carry over titles, meta descriptions and schema, and watch Search Console after launch. It's the same discipline we applied to our own site rebuild. See our website migration SEO service for the full process.
Who maintains a custom CMS, and what does it cost?
You own the code, so you can use us or any PHP or Node developer. Our website management service starts from £50 a month paid annually for standard sites; bespoke platforms get an agreed plan covering framework and dependency updates, security patches, monitoring, backups and small changes .
Can a custom CMS include bookings, calculators or customer logins?
Yes, that's usually the reason to build one. We've built an emissions calculator for NOPE, online lesson booking with payment for Ready Steady Drive, trade customer accounts for Ultrabond Adhesives and a 6,000-product catalogue searchable by product and manufacturer code for AB Components, each managed from a bespoke admin panel.
Does a custom CMS help or hurt SEO?
It helps, if it's built with SEO fields from the start: editable titles and meta descriptions, clean URLs, automatic sitemaps, schema, redirects management and fast templates. Bradgate Financial Solutions was rebuilt as bespoke PHP so new mortgage pages could be added as search opportunities appeared; its content is now cited in Google's AI Overviews.
