Does your Derby business need an app, or a better website?

Not every Derby business needs an app, and we'll say so before you pay for one. Typical day-30 retention is only 5–6%, so more than 90% of installs have gone quiet within four weeks (AppsFlyer data via Braze, 2024). An app earns its place when customers come back often, when staff need a tool in the field, or when you need push notifications, offline use, the camera or location.

Where that applies in Derby:

  • Field engineers and installersDerby has 995 construction enterprises (ONS via Nomis, 2026) plus an engineering supply chain. Job sheets, photos and signatures captured on site, syncing later, beat paper and WhatsApp.
  • Transport and logisticsDerby has 565 transport and storage enterprises (Nomis, 2026). Proof-of-delivery and vehicle-check apps are the classic offline native build.
  • Hospitality and bookingsPubs, clinics and driving schools mostly need browser booking first. We built Ready Steady Drive's Derby and Nottingham lesson booking as a web app because it was the cheaper right answer.
  • Trade reorderingSuppliers whose customers reorder weekly can justify an app with saved baskets and account pricing; a quarterly buyer is better served by a mobile website.

Whichever platform you launch first, about half your customers are on the other one: iOS and Android split UK mobile usage roughly 50/50 (StatCounter, 2026).

How much does app development cost in Derby?

UK agencies' own 2026 price guides put the main budget steps here:

  • Prototype to test the idea£2,000–£5,000, two to four weeks.
  • MVP with one core workflow£10,000–£25,000 (Magora) or £15,000–£40,000 (Foresight Mobile), eight to twelve weeks.
  • Production app with backend and admin£25,000–£60,000, twelve to twenty weeks.
  • Complex or regulated£80,000–£120,000+, five to nine months.

Those are other agencies' figures, not ours: To confirm: Vimana to confirm its own bands. Location matters too. A London boutique studio charges £60–£140 an hour (Magora, 2026), and London runs 15–25% above regional teams (Riseup Labs). A Derby business shouldn't pay Shoreditch prices.

Three store facts that change budgets:

  • Apple rejected 24.9% of submissions in 2024About two-thirds for avoidable "Performance" issues such as crashes and placeholder content (Apple, 2025). Our pre-submission QA targets those.
  • Commission is 15%, not 30%For businesses under US$1 million a year on both stores, and apps selling physical goods or real-world services pay none (Apple, 2026; Google, 2026).
  • Google Play organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S numberWhich can take 30 days (Google, 2026).

Maintenance: budget 15–25% of build cost a year for Apple's spring SDK deadline, Google's August target-API deadline and bug fixes (Magora, 2026). To confirm: Vimana to confirm from-£/month

App development across Derby and Derbyshire

How much does it cost to build an app in Derby?

On 2026 UK agency figures, a minimum viable product costs £10,000–£25,000 and a production app with its own backend £25,000–£60,000. Regional teams like ours generally come in 15–25% under London. You get a fixed scope after discovery, so the price is known before build starts.

Does my Derby business need an app or just a mobile website?

If customers use you once or twice a year, a fast mobile website wins. An app is justified when people return often, staff need a field tool, or you need push, offline, camera or location. We built Ready Steady Drive's booking as a web app for exactly that reason.

How long does app development take?

Usually 8–16 weeks to a first store-ready release. Discovery takes a week or two, design two or three, and the build six to ten, with testing and submission at the end. Store accounts, a D-U-N-S number and review rejections cause more delay than coding, so we start those early.

Native or cross-platform for a Derby app?

Go native if the app is core to the business, uses the phone's hardware or needs a long life. Cross-platform suits a simple interface on a tight budget. iOS and Android split roughly 50/50 in the UK, so you'll probably want both in time. You get the trade-offs in writing before deciding.

Who owns the app once it's built?

Your business owns it. UK copyright stays with the developer unless it is assigned in writing, so the contract assigns it to you. Source code, designs, Apple and Google accounts, signing keys and cloud accounts sit in your company's name at handover, with documentation so any developer can take over. The assignment takes effect on final payment.

Can we meet in person in Derby?

Yes. Discovery works best in the room, so we'll come to your premises in Derby or Derbyshire, or host you at The Long Eaton Hub, about 15 minutes along the A52. After that, fortnightly test builds and calls cover the build, which is how our UK-wide app clients work with us.

Can you build an app for our field engineers?

Yes. Job sheets, photos, signatures, parts requests and timesheets captured on site, with offline storage that syncs when the signal returns, and an admin panel in the office. That is the most common app brief from Derby's engineering and installation firms, and native builds handle offline use best.

How much does app maintenance cost per year?

Plan for 15–25% of the original build cost. Every spring Apple raises the SDK requirement and every August Google raises the target API level; an unmaintained app can't ship a bug fix. We offer a monthly care plan so the figure is predictable.
