WordPress vs Bespoke PHP/Laravel: Which Should a Derby Business Choose?

By Amit Saini, founder of Vimana Digital · Published 23 October 2026

Choose WordPress if your Derby business needs a content-led website you can edit yourself, on a budget from about £1,000. Prices exclude VAT. Choose bespoke PHP or Laravel, from about £5,000, when the site must handle logic plugins can't: part-code search, trade logins, quoting, bookings or integration with stock, CRM or accounting systems.

What is the difference between WordPress and a bespoke PHP or Laravel website?

WordPress is free, open-source software for building websites. It runs around 40% of all websites and about 59% of sites whose content system is known (W3Techs via Barn2, October 2026). You pick or build a theme for the design and add plugins for features: forms, SEO, ecommerce through WooCommerce, and so on.

Bespoke PHP means the website is written specifically for your business in PHP, the programming language WordPress itself uses, with no theme or plugin layer.

Laravel is a PHP framework: a well-tested toolkit of building blocks (logins, databases, queues, security protections) that a developer assembles into your system. Think of WordPress as a fitted kitchen you customise, and Laravel as a joiner's workshop with good tools.

Why does this question come up so often in Derby?

Professional website design for Excel Process Systems in Derby, an engineering and manufacturing firm.

Because Derby searches for both. Our own Search Console shows "wordpress web design derby" with 181 impressions and "bespoke web developers derby" with 38 in our latest export (Vimana Digital Search Console, 2026).

The city's economy explains the split. Derby has 7,565 registered enterprises and 6,580 of them employ fewer than ten people (ONS UK Business Counts via Nomis, March 2026). Most are trades and local services: wholesale and retail (1,260), construction (995), accommodation and food (540). For them, a well-built WordPress site is usually the right tool.

But Derby is also an engineering supply-chain city. Rolls-Royce announced more than 1,000 new Derby jobs in March 2024 (TheBusinessDesk, 2024), and the University of Derby's Top 200 Derbyshire businesses for 2025 is led by Toyota, with Rolls-Royce and Alstom in the top ten. The suppliers beneath them often need part catalogues, trade portals and integrations, which is where bespoke development starts to pay.

How do WordPress and bespoke compare, factor by factor?

FactorWordPressBespoke PHP / Laravel
Upfront cost (Vimana)From around £1,000; medium–large sites £3,000–£6,000From £5,000; web apps quoted after discovery
Time to launch (Vimana)Typically 1–3 weeks once content is agreedTypically 4–8 weeks
Editing content yourselfExcellent. Familiar editor, lots of training materialGood if a custom admin panel is built for exactly what you change
Custom logic (quotes, pricing rules, approvals)Limited to what plugins offer, or custom plugin workBuilt to your rules
Security exposureGrows with every plugin you addNo plugin layer; framework protections built in
Speed and Core Web VitalsGood with discipline; slows with heavy themes and pluginsFull control over what loads
Integrations (Xero, stock, CRM)Possible via plugins, often fragileWritten to your systems' APIs
Finding another developer laterVery easyEasy for Laravel; harder for undocumented custom code
Ongoing upkeepPlugin, theme and core updates, often monthlyFramework and server updates, on a known schedule

Google's "good" Core Web Vitals thresholds are the same for both: main content loaded within 2.5 seconds, a response to taps within 200 milliseconds, and a layout shift score under 0.1 (web.dev). Either platform can hit them. WordPress just gives you more ways to miss.

Is WordPress less secure than a bespoke site?

Not inherently. The data points at plugins:

  • 11,334 new vulnerabilities were logged across the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, up 42% on 2024 (Patchstack, February 2026).
  • 91% were in plugins, 9% in themes, and only six, all low priority, in WordPress core.
  • 46% had no patch available when they were disclosed, so updating promptly is not always enough.

A WordPress site with eight carefully chosen plugins, updated every month, is a very different risk from one with forty. That is why we aim to keep plugins on our WordPress builds to a minimum, and why website management from £50 a month (paid annually) exists. UK retainers for WordPress business sites run £129–£250 a month (CB Website Design, 2026).

Bespoke sites need upkeep too, just on a different rhythm. Laravel publishes fixed support windows: Laravel 12's bug fixes ended on 13 August 2026 and its security fixes end on 24 February 2027, while Laravel 13, released on 17 March 2026, receives security fixes until 17 March 2028 (Laravel News, 2026). A bespoke site left untouched for three years is as much a risk as a neglected WordPress site. The difference is that the schedule is known in advance.

What have we built for Derby and Derbyshire businesses, and on what?

We pick the platform per project. A sample from our Derby and Derbyshire work:

  • Diamond Alloys, Derby: WordPress, with separate service pages for refurbishment and diamond-cut wheels and our own photography of finished wheels.
  • Mainline Recycling, Derby: WordPress, written from scratch with SEO built into the copy, replacing two previous sites that were unfit for purpose.
  • J.E.T.S Ltd, Derbyshire: a compact WordPress microsite for an engineering firm whose main clients are governments around the world.
  • Donaldson Filters store for AB Components, Ilkeston: bespoke PHP, because 6,000+ products had to be searchable by keyword, product code or manufacturing code.

Two bespoke builds outside Derby show the other reasons to go custom. Bradgate Financial Solutions in Leicester was rebuilt in bespoke PHP to give its SEO content room to grow around real mortgage searches; its self-employed mortgage content is now cited in Google's AI Overview for a Leicester search. Glass Verandas UK is a clean PHP and HTML site whose structure was planned around national search from the start; it now generates leads every day.

From the Derby clients themselves:

"We have had a brand new website built by Vimana recently for our small (ish) but growing waste management company and we are super happy with the useability, look and format." (Charlotte Allen)

"Brilliant service super quick plus did a first class website for my company: Just Engineers Technical Solutions Ltd Thanks Amit" (William Williamson)

How should you decide? Four questions

  1. 1Write down what the site must do, not what it should look like. If every item is "show information" or "send an enquiry", WordPress.
  2. 2Count the plugins you'd need. If the list runs past ten, or includes custom pricing or integrations, price a bespoke build too.
  3. 3Price five years, not one. Build plus upkeep. A £1,000 site with £600 a year of management and a £6,000 bespoke site with similar upkeep differ by £5,000 up front; the question is whether the bespoke one saves staff time or wins orders worth more than that.
  4. 4Ask who owns what. Domain, hosting account, code and admin access should all be yours, whichever platform you choose. With us they are, and the code and design are assigned to you on final payment.

Is WordPress good enough for a business website?

Yes, for most businesses. WordPress runs around 40% of all websites, is easy to edit and has developers everywhere. It suits sites built around pages, a blog and enquiries. It becomes a poor fit when you need custom logic, trade logins or deep integrations, which usually means stacking many plugins and the maintenance risk that brings.

How much does a bespoke website cost compared with WordPress?

Our WordPress websites start from around £1,000, with medium to large sites at £3,000–£6,000. Bespoke PHP or Laravel builds start from £5,000, and web applications are quoted after a discovery phase. Hosting starts from £120 a year with SSL included, and website management from £50 a month, paid annually.

Is Laravel better than WordPress?

Neither is better in general; they solve different problems. WordPress is a ready-made content system you customise with themes and plugins. Laravel is a PHP framework for building custom applications with logins, rules and integrations. For a brochure site WordPress is quicker and cheaper. For a portal, catalogue or quoting tool, Laravel is usually the cleaner choice.

Can I edit a bespoke website myself?

Yes, if it is built with an admin panel for the content you actually change. Those screens are designed around your routine updates, such as pages, products, prices or news, so staff don't need a developer for everyday edits. New features still need development work, which is the main trade-off against WordPress plugins.

Can you move my WordPress site to a bespoke build without losing rankings?

Yes, if the migration is planned. That means keeping every existing URL where possible, redirecting any that must change, carrying over titles, descriptions and content, and checking Search Console after launch. Rankings usually fall after a rebuild because URLs changed without redirects or content disappeared, both of which are avoidable.

Send us your current website and a list of what it can't do. We'll tell you whether WordPress will cover it or whether a bespoke build is worth the money, and give you a fixed quote either way.
